Bermuda Championship preview and betting tips 2022

Jaeger is in search of his maiden tour win.

Bermuda Championship Golf Tips

Stephen Jaeger 1pt 33/1 8 Places

Brandon Wu 2pts 50/1 8 Places

Callum Tarren 1pt 66/1 6 Places

Rory McIlroy returns to world number one after winning the CJ Cup on Sunday over Kurt Kitayama, KH-Lee and Jon Rahm. Well deserved too with the year he’s had after also winning the Canadian Open and the TOUR Championship as well as finishing top-10 in all four major championships. He just looks like such an all-round player now and I’m confident in him winning a major next year and ending his drought in major championships. This week on the PGA Tour we’re at Port Royal Golf Club, a short coastal track measuring at 6,842 yards and playing as a par 71, it plays host to the Bermuda Championship for the fourth year running.

This is a really poor renewal and one of the worst fields I’ve seen on the PGA Tour for a long time but nevertheless, it still represents some good betting opportunities if we can find some value. Denny McCarthy has been established as the tournament favourite at 16/1, closely followed by Thomas Detry who has been playing well of late at 18/1 and Seamus Power is sure to be a popular pick at 22/1. Last year saw Lucas Herbert win the tournament by one stroke over Danny Lee & Patrick Reed. The winners of this event before that were Brendon Todd (2019) and Brian Gay (2020) so the most obvious indicator here is that distance is not important this week.

Stephan Jaeger 33/1

My first pick this week is the German Stephan Jaeger, in the 2021 renewal of this event and on his debut he finished 20th, a decent finish on his first try. Jaeger’s stats over the last 24 rounds amongst this field really caught my eye, 5th SG: T2G and 10th SG: Approach. Since his missed cut in the 3M Open in July, he has made every cut since including a 5th at the Rocket Mortgage. He also qualified for the first FedEx Cup event in his first full season on the PGA Tour. We aren’t getting a great price at 33/1 admittedly but in this field, I’m happy to side with him in hope he can make his PGA Tour breakthrough.

Brandon Wu 50/1

After hours of research, this might be my favourite bet of the week and I think Brandon Wu is a great price at 50/1. Wu looks like he’s going to have a great career and I think his ceiling is higher than most in this field. We’ve seen him post some great finishes on the PGA Tour this year, 2nd at the Mexico Open behind Rahm, 3rd at the Puerto Rico Open (another coastal track), 6th at the Scottish Open which was probably the best field that tournament has ever seen. Wu also finished 35th in the US Open at Pebble Beach when he was still an amateur, clearly liking a coastal test. He ranks 15th T2G and 7th Off-The-Tee over the last 24 rounds, he also ranked 7th for GIR at the ZOZO Championship a few weeks ago and I think he will go well this week.

Callum Tarren 66/1

My final player in my short portfolio this week is Callum Tarren and I like his chances this week at a decent price of 66/1. It was a solid first season on the PGA Tour for Tarren who managed to post three top-10 finishes and was also 2nd after round one of the US Open but eventually finished 31st, still a good finish for a player who was a Korn Ferry Tour member in 2021. Tarren ranks as one of the best players in the field on the stats I use over the last 24 rounds, 3rd T2G, 4th SG: Ball Striking, 7th SG: Approach and 22nd SG: Putting. Tarren did miss the cut in his most recent start at the Shriner’s but he has the knack of posting a good finish after a missed cut. He missed the cut at the Traveler’s and finished 6th in his next event. He also missed the cut at the Fortinet and then finished 13th in his next start at the Sanderson Farms Championship.
